Walls have been an essential part of landscape constructions since humans first began to build. Perhaps it's this long history that we have with walls that make them seem right at home in the landscape. Walls are typically designed to mark boundaries and sculpt the earth, but they can definitely create aesthetic appeal as well, becoming an extension as part of the natural environment or adding a decorative interest.

There are two types of walls: retaining walls and freestanding walls. Retaining walls are designed to hold back soil and thus can be used to transform ground that is naturally sloped into usable, level areas that can be then transformed into patios, gardens, planting beds and other types of living spaces. Steeper landscapes may require multiple retaining walls that can also be designed to form a series of terraces that gradually transition from the top to the bottom of the slope. Depending on the type soil conditions of the area and the type of material that will be used, retaining walls that are taller than a few feet will likely need to be engineered in order to ensure stability.

Proper wall construction requires lots of training, experience and knowledge regarding wall engineering principles (including drainage issues, soil conditions, base preparation, et cetera). These days, there are dozens of different styles to choose from if you decide to choose the segmental concrete block retaining wall route. Whatever you decide, we are here to help. The other type of hardscape wall commonly used in landscape construction is a freestanding wall. Freestanding walls rest on top of a level ground surface and have finished faces on boths sides. They can be used to create separation in different landscape areas and are also a great way to spark visual aesthetic appeal. When built around a patio, a small freestanding wall with capstones can also turn into a bench for patio seating (often even circling around a patio fire pit) and can even incorporate built-in outdoor lighting.
